The Met Department predicts that the rain is likely to subside on Thursday.Dhaka’s broken traffic system came to a complete halt on Wednesday after a third day of rain.
Torrential downpour from early morning clogged the drainage system and flooded many of the arterial roads in the capital. Met Department says from 6am to 1pm, the rainfall in Dhaka and its neighbourhood was 56mm.
Many office-bound citizens said they were left waiting for hours on the road to get transportation, and then sitting in traffic even longer.
A Dhaka Tribune correspondent who travelled from Mirpur to Tikatuli this morning reported that it took her four-and-a-half hours to get there.In Mirpur, the area around Section 10 roundabout was submerged in knee-deep water during the morning rush hour, the correspondent reported.
The road from Farmgate Khamarbari to Karwanbazar intersection, one of the busiest roads in the city, was also submerged.
In The financial district Motijheel and in Tikatuli to its south, people were walking in knee-deep water.
