Posts, Telecommunications and Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam on Thursday said mobile operators must prioritize affordable, reliable, uninterrupted and high-quality telecommunications services, urging providers to address persistent consumer complaints over call drops, poor network quality and the pricing of voice and mobile internet packages.
Speaking at the inauguration of Grameenphone's "Digital Inclusion for Marginalized Communities – Phase II" program at the Sheraton Dhaka in Banani, the minister said commercial success should not come at the expense of customer satisfaction.
Referring to widespread public complaints, he urged mobile operators—particularly those with large subscriber bases—to take immediate and effective measures to reduce call drops, improve network performance and review the affordability of voice and data packages.
He said dependable telecommunications services are fundamental to the government's broader digital transformation agenda and are essential to ensuring that the benefits of technology reach every citizen.
The minister said the government is working to transform Bangladesh into a US$1 trillion economy by 2034 under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, with digital connectivity playing a central role in that vision.
He said efforts to promote digital inclusion, strengthen digital literacy and build a skilled workforce would not succeed unless telecommunications services are accessible, affordable and dependable across the country.
Emphasizing inclusive development, Faqir Mahbub Anam said women, young people, persons with disabilities, transgender communities and other marginalized groups must have equal opportunities to participate in Bangladesh's digital transformation.
He also called for greater investment in underserved areas, saying no community should be left behind in the country's digital journey and that affordable connectivity remains critical to improving people's quality of life.
The remarks came as Grameenphone launched the second phase of its "Digital Inclusion for Marginalized Communities" initiative, aimed at expanding digital access for disadvantaged communities.
Among those present were Grameenphone Chief Executive Officer Yasir Azman, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Major General (Retd.) Md Emdad Ul Bari, senior government officials, representatives of the private sector, development partners and other stakeholders.
