Shukrabad waterlogging disrupts daily life

Residents and businesses remained stranded as waist-deep water persisted on roads until the evening

Update : 12 Jul 2026, 07:53 PM

Continuous rainfall throughout the day and night left large parts of Dhaka waterlogged on Sunday, with Shukrabad emerging as one of the hardest-hit areas.

Waist-deep water inundated roads until 6pm, preventing many residents from leaving their homes.

Residents said water usually takes longer to recede in Shukrabad than in other parts of the city.

Local shopkeeper Shuvo said he was unable to open his shop throughout the day after rainwater entered the premises. Although he reopened the shop when the water level dropped slightly around 4pm, he found that most of his goods had been damaged.

He said: "Almost all my merchandise has been damaged. My brother's pharmacy next door is in an even worse condition. None of us could open our businesses throughout the day."

Akhtaruzzaman, who runs a business behind BRB Hospital, said the ground floor of his shop had been submerged, forcing him to stay on an elevated platform.

He said: "Not a single customer came today, whereas I usually make sales of Tk1,000 or more."

Atik, a vegetable vendor, said he brought produce from Karwan Bazar early in the morning but could not sell any because the road remained underwater throughout the day.

He said: "I have been sitting beside my van all day without making a single sale. I'm hoping the rain will not return in the evening so that I can at least recover my investment."

Another resident said rainwater entered his ground-floor apartment, damaging furniture, clothes and other household belongings.

The resident said: "We started pumping the water out after the rain stopped, but it will take time for everything to return to normal. We couldn't even cook because the stove was under water. Water recedes from other parts of the city much earlier, but in Shukrabad it remains for hours. Even at 6pm, the water was still waist-deep."
