Strong winds and bad weather disrupted landing operations at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday, forcing a China Southern Airlines flight to divert to Kolkata and a Biman Bangladesh Airlines domestic flight to return to Chittagong.
Airport sources said the affected flights were scheduled to land between 11:30am and 12pm.
A China Southern Airlines flight from Guangzhou was due to land in Dhaka around noon. After circling over the capital for some time, the aircraft was unable to land and diverted to Kolkata, India.
Meanwhile, a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Chittagong aborted its landing during the final approach to Dhaka and returned to Chittagong.
The weather disruption also affected several other flights, with aircraft operated by Qatar Airways, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, US-Bangla Airlines and Thai Airways unable to land on schedule.
Landing operations gradually resumed from 12:30pm after weather conditions improved.
Sources concerned said strong winds over Dhaka temporarily disrupted landing operations, prompting pilots to take precautionary decisions with passenger safety as the top priority.
