A man who suffered severe burn injuries in a gas leak explosion at a house in Narayanganj’s Fatulla died while undergoing treatment on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as vegetable seller Md Kalam, 45, who sustained 95% burns in the incident.

Dr Shaon Bin Rahman of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery confirmed the death.

Earlier on Sunday morning, five members of the same family suffered burn injuries in an explosion reportedly caused by gas leakage at a ground-floor flat on Road No. 6 in the Bhuigar Giridhara area of Fatulla.

The injured were rescued in critical condition and admitted to the burn institute in Dhaka.

The victims were Kalam, his wife Saima, 40, son Munna, 12, daughter Munni, 10, and Katha, 7.

According to hospital sources, Saima suffered 60% burns, Munna 30%, Munni 35% and Katha 52%.

Md Hasan, a neighbour who took the victims to the hospital, said locals rushed to the house after hearing a loud explosion around 7am.

“We saw the house on fire and rescued the family members from inside before taking them to the burn institute,” he said.

He added that the explosion was believed to have been caused by gas leakage inside the house.

Abdullah Al Arifin, deputy assistant director of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence in Narayanganj, said preliminary findings suggest gas had leaked from a kitchen line adjacent to a room on the west side of the flat.

“The leaked gas accumulated inside the closed room. Later, when one of the tenants tried to light a cigarette lighter, the explosion occurred,” he said.
