A van driver was stabbed to death in Dhanmondi in the capital late Tuesday night following an altercation with a pitha vendor.

The deceased was identified as Roni Khandaker, 47, son of the late Abdus Samad Khandaker of Chitalmari Shyampara village in Bagerhat district. He is survived by two children.

According to police and family members, the incident occurred on Road No. 3 in Dhanmondi after an argument broke out between Roni and a pitha vendor named Rubel over renting a van. At one stage, Rubel allegedly assaulted and stabbed Roni before fleeing the scene.

Locals rescued the injured van driver and took him to Popular Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon examination.

Roni’s son, Raihan Khandaker, said that an associate of the accused was detained by people in the area following the incident.

Dhanmondi Police Station Sub-Inspector Shahjalal said the body was recovered and sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for autopsy.

“Roni died due to excessive bleeding. A case is being prepared in this connection,” he added.
