Saddam was granted bail in a case filed in Bagerhat and that he had already been on bail in his other cases, says Jessore Central Jail Superintendent Abid Ahmed

Update : 26 Jan 2026, 10:14 PM

The bail order of Jewel Hasan Saddam, president of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Chhatra League (a banned organization), who is currently detained at Jessore Central Jail, has not yet reached the prison authorities, preventing his release on Monday (January 26).

Jessore Central Jail Superintendent Abid Ahmed confirmed the matter to Dhaka Trib around 7pm.

He said the bail order for Chhatra League leader Jewel Hasan Saddam has not yet arrived at the jail, and therefore he cannot be released at this time. He added that Saddam will be released once the bail documents are received.

Earlier on Monday, the High Court granted Saddam six months’ bail on humanitarian grounds following the deaths of his wife and nine-month-old child. The order was issued by a High Court bench comprising Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan. Saddam was represented in court by lawyer Saeed Ahmed Raja.

Superintendent Abid Ahmed further said that although the High Court has granted six months’ bail, no comment can be made regarding his release until the official documents are received.

He added that Saddam was granted bail in a case filed in Bagerhat and that he had already been on bail in his other cases. As a result, there are no legal obstacles to his release once the bail order reaches the prison.

Saddam is currently in prison in connection with multiple cases. On the evening of January 24, he was allowed to see the bodies of his deceased wife and nine-month-old son for just five minutes at the gate of Jessore Central Jail. As he was not granted parole, the bodies were brought to the jail gate by ambulance.

Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 last year, Saddam went into hiding for several days before being arrested in Gopalganj. He has since been in Jessore Central Jail.
