A video has gone viral on social media showing Ducsu Executive Member Sarbamitra Chakma forcing a group of teenage boys, who had come to play, to hold their ears and do squats while he stood over them with a stick.
In the footage, Sarbamitra Chakma is seen walking toward the boys with a stick in hand as they play on the university’s central field. The teenagers can be seen holding their ears and squatting, while Chakma paces beside them, stick in hand.
Surja Sen Hall unit Chhatra Dal leader Abidur Rahman shared the video and wrote that Ducsu member Sarbamitra Chakma had taken on the role of the university proctor and was forcing children to do squats as punishment. “Their only ‘crime’ was coming to play on the university field,” he wrote.
“If the children had committed any wrongdoing, it is the university administration that has the authority to deal with it. This is a glimpse of the kind of governance Shibir wants to impose. This is what happens when someone exploits a small amount of power,” he added.
Abidur Rahman also claimed that the video was recorded on January 6.
Tanvir Bari Hamim, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party–backed Ducsu GS candidate, also commented on the incident on Facebook, writing: “How did this bizarre creature named Sarbamitra Chakma even end up at Dhaka University? Only God knows. Shouldn’t this creature be sent to a zoo, or perhaps to the Safari Park in Maşaï Mara?”
