Protesters on Friday surrounded Tejgaon Police Station demanding the arrest of the killers of Azizur Rahman Mosabbir, as law enforcement agencies failed to identify the perpetrators even two days after the shooting.

Relatives of the deceased, political associates, and traders from Karwan Bazar staged the protest, demanding arrests and trial of those responsible.

The protest march began around 1:30pm from the alley behind Star Kabab at Tejturi Bazar, the site of the killing. The procession moved through Karwan Bazar intersection and reached Tejgaon Police Station, where protesters surrounded the premises and staged a sit-in for about 30 minutes, chanting slogans demanding the arrest of the killers.

The situation eased after senior officials of Tejgaon Police Station assured the protesters that those involved would be identified and arrested soon. The procession later ended at Sonargaon intersection after passing again through Karwan Bazar intersection.

Participants said police informed them that the investigation had made significant progress and arrests would follow shortly.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tejgaon Police Station Keshainu Marma said family members of the deceased and locals, including Tarek, chief of the Am Janata Dal, had gathered demanding the arrest of those involved in the killing.

“We have obtained several CCTV footages from the crime scene. Analysis of the footage is underway to identify the criminals, and their identities will be disclosed and they will be arrested very soon,” the OC said.

Azizur Rahman Mosabbir, former general secretary of the Dhaka Metropolitan North Swechchhasebak Dal, was shot dead by assailants around 8:00pm on Wednesday (January 7) in the alley behind Star Kabab at Tejturi Bazar.

In the same incident, Abu Sufian Masud, general secretary of the Karwan Bazar Van Drivers’ Association, was also shot and is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
