Fire from gas leak in Jatrabari burns three of same family

Fire originated when a mosquito coil was lit, igniting accumulated gas from a leak, says police

Three members of the same family, including a child, suffered burn injuries in a fire caused by a gas leak at a house on Shahid Faruk Road in the capital’s Jatrabari.

They were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in critical condition. The incident occurred late on Wednesday.

The injured have been identified as Ripon, 40, his wife Iti, 30, and their daughter Rafia, 4.

Resident surgeon of the Burn Institute, Shawon Bin Rahman, said the condition of all three is critical. Ripon sustained 70% burns, Iti 45%, and Rafia 90%.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Al Amin of Jatrabari police station confirmed the matter. He said the fire originated around 1am on the ground floor of a six-storey building on Shahid Faruk Road when a mosquito coil was lit, igniting accumulated gas from a leak.

According to the family, the gas may have come through the manhole opening in the bathroom.

He added that the couple and their daughter lived in the apartment. Ripon hails from Naria upazila in Shariatpur district.
