Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed has said major reforms in the banking sector will be implemented by December.

Speaking at the “SME Foundation–ERF Media Award 2025” ceremony in Purana Paltan on Wednesday, he said: “There is a strong need for major reforms in the banking sector. Actions have already begun regarding weak banks. Banks must ensure the security of depositors’ money.”

He stated that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was unwilling to hold a meeting regarding the disbursement of its loan tranche due to complications surrounding the restructuring and division of the National Board of Revenue (NBR). “The IMF did not consider the letter sent by the NBR chairman. I had to explain the issue myself,” he added.

About the SME sector, the adviser said: “The SME sector contributes significantly to the economy. Its role in women’s empowerment is undeniable. However, financing remains a major problem in the sector. Entrepreneurs face various difficulties in securing loans from banks, even though the repayment rate in this sector is relatively good.”

He said: “The use of technology must increase in the SME sector. A digital database must be developed. In many cases, there is still a dependence on hard copies, which is hindering the path to modern banking.”

Addressing policymakers and bankers, he said: “Bangladesh Bank must become more proactive in providing institutional support in this sector. The Ministry of Finance will also provide the necessary assistance.”

Salehuddin further said: “Participation of women in the SME sector has slightly decreased, which is concerning. For sustainable development in this sector, it must advance through a combination of technology, financing, and skill development.”

During the award ceremony, the finance adviser said: “Constructive reporting by journalists plays a key role in advancing the SME sector. Positive journalism accelerates reform and innovation in various sectors of the economy.”

At the event, 20 journalists working in newspapers, television, and online platforms were awarded the “SME–ERF Media Award 2025” in 10 categories.
