Three members of a family who fell sick on Sunday morning at a hotel in Dhaka's Moghbazar area were later declared dead after being taken to the hospital.

The deceased were identified as Monir Hossain, an expatriate worker, his wife Swapna, and their son Arafat Hossain Nayeem, confirmed Officer-in-charge of Ramna police station, Golam Faruq.

The OC said Monir and his family had come to Dhaka from their village home in Ramganj upazila of Lakshmipur district on Saturday afternoon for medical consultations.

They had tried to get an appointment with Prof Dr Din Muhammad at his hospital on Eskaton Road, the OC said, quoting relatives of the victims.

As they were unable to get an appointment on Saturday, they decided to stay at a residential hotel—Hotel Sweet Sleep—near the Moghbazar intersection for the night, hoping to get an appointment on Sunday.

The OC further said the trio suddenly fell ill in the morning, experiencing vomiting. At one point, Monir called his uncle, Rafiqul Islam, over the phone.

Later, his uncle arrived at the hotel around 11am and rushed them to nearby Al Din Hospital, where they were declared dead, the OC added.

Police suspect that the deaths may have been caused by food poisoning. However, the actual cause will be determined after the post-mortem report is received.

The bodies will be sent to the DMCH morgue for autopsy.

In response to a question, the OC said that CCTV footage of the hotel has been reviewed, and an investigation is underway to determine if any other factors were involved in the deaths.
