Government employees continued their protest at the Secretariat on Wednesday despite the rain, demanding the repeal of the Government Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.
The employees gathered at Badamtala in front of Building 6 of the Secretariat around 11am and began a protest march.
They then proceeded to the ground floor of the new Cabinet Division building, where they held a protest rally.
According to sources, the movement is being led by the Bangladesh Secretariat Officers and Employees Unity Forum, an alliance of various organizations representing officials and staff of the Secretariat.
Co-chairmen Md Badiul Kabir and Md Nurul Islam, and Co-General Secretary Md Nazrul Islam, among other leaders, were present at the rally.
Speaking at the rally, Nurul said: “We demand the cancellation of the government service law and a 50% dearness allowance. We also demand the removal of officers who are collaborators of fascism.”
He added that preparations for conferences in all eight divisions of the country have already begun in support of the ordinance’s repeal, and those preparations will soon be finalized.
Badiul said: “This movement will continue as before until the ordinance is completely withdrawn or repealed.”
Nazrul said: “We have heard that a committee led by the law advisor will recommend amendments to the job ordinance. But we will not accept that.”
After the Eid holidays, Secretariat employees resumed their movement on Monday and held protest marches and rallies at the Secretariat the next day.
Notably, the Government Service (Amendment) Ordinance was issued on May 25, allowing termination of employment for four types of disciplinary breaches through a simple show-cause notice, without a departmental case.
The draft of the ordinance had been approved in the Advisory Council meeting on May 22.
Since May 24, officials and employees have been staging a united movement at the Secretariat, demanding the repeal of what they describe as a repressive and black law.
