The National Citizen Party (NCP) began staging demonstrations in front of Nirbachan Bhaban, demanding the reconstitution of the Election Commission (EC) and the arrangement of local government elections.
The demonstration started at 12pm on Wednesday in the Agargaon area of the city.
The NCP Dhaka city unit organized the demonstrations against the current EC led by AMM Nasir Uddin.
NCP leaders alleged that this commission was constituted hastily before any reform initiatives were implemented.
“This commission has already lost its neutrality,” said Nur Islam Jewel, leader of the NCP Gulshan Thana unit.
Referring to the current commission as one formed under a law created by a fascist regime, he added: “We don't want this commission, which is like the Rakib Commission.”
Pointing to the BNP, the NCP leaders urged the party to test its popularity through local body elections before contesting the national election.
