Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain will continue their sit-in in front of the Nagar Bhaban on Tuesday, reiterating their demand for the formal handover of mayoral responsibilities to him as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
This announcement came during their ongoing blockade program at Nagar Bhaban on Monday afternoon, which marks the fifth day of protests there.
Ishraque’s supporter and former secretary, Moshiur Rahman, condemned the government's "irresponsible" stance for not honouring the will of the city’s residents.
He denounced a statement made by Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain regarding Ishraque's assumption of the mayoral post as “blatant misinformation” and affirmed that the protest will continue until the demand is fulfilled.
He warned that if the demand is not met by Tuesday, the government will be held accountable for the consequences.
Moshiur also cautioned the authorities to be prepared for any situation.
Earlier that day, at 11am, protesters enforced a blockade around Nagar Bhaban and its surrounding areas.
Later, the roads near Golap Shah Mazar in Gulistan and Bongo Market were also blockaded, resulting in a complete standstill in and around Nagar Bhaban, including the nearby Police Headquarters.
The demonstrators noted that the Election Tribunal has declared Ishraque mayor and the Election Commission has already issued a gazette, but the administration’s refusal to hand over responsibilities has prompted their strong protests, with protesters demanding Ishraque be immediately entrusted with the duties of mayor.
