Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that the investigation into the murder of DU student Shahriar Alam Shammo will be handed over to the Detective Branch (DB).

The adviser gave this assurance on Sunday afternoon when a delegation led by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan met with him at his Secretariat office.

DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed, Prof Hosne Ara Begum, acting director of Dhaka University's Institute of Education and Research, along with several student representatives, also attended the meeting.

Students and teachers from the IER as well as leaders and activists from various student organizations were present at the protest.

Later, DU Vice-Chancellor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan and Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed joined the protest and expressed solidarity with the protesters around noon.

Niaz said they came to express solidarity with the demand for justice for Shammo, and announced that they will hold a special meeting with the home adviser later in the day.

Later, students and teachers from Dhaka University's Institute of Education and Research surrounded Shahbagh police station around 12:30pm, following their earlier issued 48-hour ultimatum, demanding justice.

The students and teachers left Shahbagh police station around 1:45pm, after assurance of justice from a meeting with DMP Ramna Zone ADC Mir Asaduzzaman and Khalid Mansur, OC, Shahbagh police station.

Asaduzzaman said in the meeting that they have concrete evidence in the case, but they are unable to disclose it to the press or students due to the chances of the investigation process being interrupted.

Additionally, Masud Alam, DC of Ramna Zone, DMP, said that they will be able to disseminate further information on the Shahriar Alam Shammo murder case after interrogating the arrestees for the next six days, and are taking other factors into consideration in the investigation process.
