Update : 18 May 2025, 09:58 PM

Firefighters managed to bring under control on Sunday night a massive fire that had broken out in the Shyamal Palli shanty town in Vashantek, Mirpur 13, in the evening.

Seven units from Kurmitola and Mirpur fire stations worked to contain the blaze after being alerted.

Talha Bin Zasim, an officer of the media cell at the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters, said the first unit reached the scene by 8:10pm — just 15 minutes after the fire was reported — and began operations.

Six more units joined the effort shortly after.

The cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage have yet to be confirmed.

No casualties have been reported so far.

A fire service investigation team is currently assessing the origin of the blaze and estimating losses.

Several hundred residents were evacuated to safety during the rescue operation.

Although the flames have been extinguished, parts of the shanty town remain hazardous due to lingering smoke, according to rescue workers.
