DNCC: Allegations against Mohammad Azaz politically motivated

'These claims appear to be part of a broader pattern of targeting individuals who have been vocal critics of previous regimes'

Update : 18 May 2025, 02:45 PM

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) denounced recent allegations linking Administrator Mohammad Azaz to the banned organization Hizb ut-Tahrir, describing them as “entirely baseless and politically motivated.”

"These claims appear to be part of a broader pattern of targeting individuals who have been vocal critics of previous regimes' human rights violations and environmental degradation," the statement, which was issued on Saturday, said

Appointed as Dhaka North administrator in February 2025, Mohammad Azaz is widely recognized for his 16 years of work as a public intellectual, environmental activist, and writer.

According to the statement, his consistent advocacy against authoritarianism, wetland encroachment, and water injustices, along with his efforts to promote water sovereignty, address transboundary river issues, and protect riverine livelihoods, has earned him national recognition while also placing him at odds with powerful vested interests.

The allegations stem from a 2015 incident in which individuals allegedly linked to Hizb ut-Tahrir were arrested at a property owned by Azaz.

The statement clarified that Azaz neither lived in the building nor had any connection to the incident.

He was implicated solely because he was the landlord, it added, noting that subsequent investigations and legal proceedings fully acquitted him, reaffirming his innocence.

The statement also noted that Azaz has consistently opposed the politicization of religion and the instrumental use of Islam in politics.

His work with diverse groups, including Hindu fishing communities, and his leadership in progressive movements highlight his commitment to inclusive and justice-driven values.

As the current administrator of DNCC, Azaz has prioritized transparency, accountability, and people-centered urban governance. Initiatives under his leadership include:

  • Publishing detailed information on all DNCC projects online to ensure public scrutiny and accountability.
  • Implementing measures to curb corruption and resist illegal tender practices.
  • Launching programs to enhance environmental sustainability, such as installing air quality monitors and reclaiming public spaces.

According to the statement, Azaz's actions have disrupted entrenched interests, prompting orchestrated smear campaigns intended to undermine his credibility.

It added that the revival of previously debunked narratives is a deliberate attempt to distract from the meaningful reforms being advanced under his leadership.
