Update : 14 May 2025, 11:36 AM

Police have detained three individuals in connection with the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a student of Dhaka University.

The detentions came in the early hours of Wednesday, although the identities of the detainees have not yet been disclosed.

Shammo, 25, was a student of the 2018–19 session at the Institute of Education and Research (IER) and the literary and publication secretary of the AF Rahman Hall unit of Chhatra Dal.

Meanwhile, in the morning, the victim's elder brother, Shariful Islam, filed a case at Shahbagh police station accusing 10 to 12 individuals over the murder.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Khalid Mansur said: “Three individuals have been detained. We are investigating whether others were involved in the incident. A murder case has been filed by the victim’s brother.”

Earlier, around midnight, Shammo was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a critically injured state, where doctors declared him dead.

Following the incident, DMP Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam said three youths attacked Shammo near the Kali Mandir area of Suhrawardy Udyan.

The attackers were also injured during the incident and were receiving treatment at a clinic, he said.

"Upon receiving information, police detained two of them from the clinic, while the third suspect managed to flee and efforts to arrest him are ongoing," he said.

He added that preliminary investigations suggest a physical altercation broke out near Ramna Kali Mandir over a motorcycle collision, during which the DU student was stabbed to death.

Multiple police teams are currently working to uncover further details, said the police officer.
