DNCC says tax defaulters will not be spared any more

DNCC officials will go to your home and take legal measures if you do not pay your taxes voluntarily, Mohammad Azaz tells residents

Dhaka North City Corporation administrator Mohammad Azaz on Sunday said the DNCC will no longer spare people who do not pay taxes by using political influence.

“DNCC officials will go to your home and take legal measures if you do not pay your taxes voluntarily,” Azaz said while inaugurating the DNCC Tax Fair 2025 on its Zone 3 premises in the Mohakhali area as the chief guest.

Among others, DNCC Chief Executive Officer Abu Sayeed Md Kamruzzaman, Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md Moin Uddin and Chief Revenue Officer Mohammad Abdullah were present at the event.

Azaz said the general public wants to pay corporation taxes, but do not come to the DNCC office considering the complex tax payment process.

“We have already solved such problems by introducing an online system,” the administrator said, adding that the residents of the DNCC area now can pay their taxes online, staying at home.

“We have come to know through public hearings in city corporation areas that the revenue collection is comparatively less than the amount required for construction of roads, drainage and road lights,” he said, adding that the DNCC provides civic facilities for all, regardless of whether he or she is a tax payer or not.

“The tax fair has been arranged to achieve the collection target and make it easy to meet the huge expenses of the corporation,” Mohammad Azaz said.

Mentioning the name of Basundhara Residential Area, he also urged corporation officials to explore a new area for additional tax collection.

“We have encouraged the residents of the new 18 wards under the DNCC to pay taxes through public hearings,” he said, adding that those who will pay taxes at the fair will get adequate facilities and their problems will be solved while sitting at a table.

Expressing dissatisfaction, the DNCC administrator said that the corporate houses are reluctant to pay taxes, whereas they are enjoying all sorts of civic facilities from the corporation.

“There are at least 25,000 people in the DNCC area whose arrears tax is over Tk1 lakh, and there are over one lakh house or flat owners in the area who don’t pay their taxes,” he said.

The payment of taxes is the responsibility of a citizen, he said, urging all to pay their taxes. Otherwise, notices would be served to them for confiscating their properties, he added.

The administrator said: “The corporation is with you for 24 hours so that you can pay taxes for the development, if we really want to change Dhaka city”.
