Police have arrested a youth accused of collecting extortion money after a private car was parked in the Jigatola area in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.
The suspect had been identified as Md Ashraful, 23, a resident of Hazaribagh in the capital and originally from Lakshmipur, DMP Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam confirmed late on Tuesday, adding that legal proceedings against him were underway.
The detention came after a video showing the extortion incident went viral on social media, prompting police to launch a drive to detain the youth, reports Bangla Tribune.
Viral video
In the widely shared Facebook video, a young man in a white shirt is seen collecting money with a receipt in hand.
A verbal altercation breaks out between him and the car owner.
At one point, a person inside the vehicle questions the youth about his aggressive behaviour, to which he replies: “Yes, I am doing it. Any problem?”
The car owner’s wife is then heard asking for his name. “What will you do with my name?” the youth retorts.
The video also shows the car owner saying: “I parked the car on the road, paid him money. Now I am watching what is going on.”
Upon noticing he is being filmed from inside the car, the youth is seen fixing his hair and says: “The face looks nice on camera. You will not be able to lay a finger on me.”
He then walks away from the scene.
