DNCC to launch drive to reclaim occupied public spaces

'Once the Shobar Dhaka app is launched, citizens will be able to easily lodge complaints'

Update : 10 Apr 2025, 10:03 PM

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will soon launch an operation to reclaim public spaces that have been illegally occupied.

The announcement was made by DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz during a public hearing for Zone-3, held at the Madhubag Community Centre in the capital on Thursday.

He said: "Vacant land will be reclaimed and developed into small public spaces, including playgrounds and parks, which will be under constant supervision."

He added: "No one will be allowed to use these spaces without permission. A monitoring committee, involving local residents, will be formed to oversee the spaces."

The administrator further said: "From next week, a strict drive will be initiated against illegal encroachers on footpaths and roads. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has already begun installing trappers on main roads to stop autorickshaws from plying."

Ejaz also said: "The specific duties of mosquito control and sanitation workers will be published on the DNCC website, and any negligence in duty will be addressed.

"Once the Shobar Dhaka app is launched, citizens will be able to easily lodge complaints," he added.

Officials from various DNCC departments were present at the public hearing.
