Two students from the University of Dhaka (DU) were physically assaulted on Monday during a protest in support of Palestinian independence and against the ongoing genocide in Gaza by Israel.
The altercation, which reportedly stemmed from a verbal dispute, left both students seriously injured, reports Bangla Tribune.
Students from the University of Dhaka as well as various colleges and nursing institutes in the city began gathering at the TSC (Teacher-Student Centre) premises from 11am.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred around 1:30pm following a misunderstanding.
The injured students were identified as Khaled Hasan, from the Arabic Department (academic session 2021–22), and Sunny Sarker, from the Department of Political Science (session 2022–23).
Raiyan Ferdous, a student of the Pharmacy Department, wrote in a WhatsApp group named "July Movement" that while preparing for the program, Khaled and Sunny went to TSC to bring the largest Palestinian flag on campus.
He added: “On the way, near the Raju Memorial Sculpture, they got into a verbal dispute with a few other students. Eyewitnesses said the misunderstanding escalated quickly into violence.”
At one point, an agitated crowd turned on Sunny Sarker. Other students who tried to rescue him were also assaulted.
Witnesses said a group of around 50 to 60 people at the scene joined in the attack, branding the victims as "anti-Islamic". Sunny was swiftly taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after the assault.
A CT scan and X-ray were performed on him.
Doctors have confirmed that while he is now out of danger, he sustained significant physical injuries.
He was reportedly attacked again on the way to the hospital.
A student named Raiyan said: “Today we could have witnessed another incident like Tofazzal murder if Sunny hadn't made it back alive. The victim is a DU student this time — maybe that’s why people will care a little less.”
Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, proctor of the University of Dhaka, said: “We are taking the matter very seriously. There have been allegations of involvement with Hizb ut-Tahrir, and we are looking into those thoroughly.”
He added: “Law enforcement agencies are also working on this. Action will certainly be taken following a proper investigation.”
