Police have detained eight members from a procession of the banned organization Hizb ut-Tahrir in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area.

They were apprehended on Friday after the Jummah prayers from a procession near the Taqwa Mosque in Dhanmondi, confirmed by the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Ramna Division Police, Jisanul Haque.

ADC Jisanul said: "Members of Hizb ut-Tahrir attempted to stage a sudden procession from Taqwa Mosque in Dhanmondi 8. As police officers on duty quickly responded and chased them, the procession dispersed. The participants attempted to flee through various alleys. At that time, Dhanmondi police apprehended eight individuals from the scene. Banners, placards, and festoons of the banned organization Hizb ut-Tahrir were recovered from them."

This is the second such procession by Hizb ut-Tahrir in the past few months.

Earlier, on March 7, police used tear gas shells and sound grenades to disperse a procession of Hizb ut-Tahrir near the national mosque, Baitul Mukarram, in the capital.

A total of 34 members were arrested on that occasion.
