A youth accused of raping a six-year-old child in the capital’s Khilkhet area is in critical condition after being severely beaten by a mob.
Khilkhet police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamal Hossain said on Wednesday that the accused, Rabiul alias Jan Mia, was taken into police custody from Khilkhet Madhyapara the previous night following allegations of child rape, reports Bangla Tribune.
“However, while being transported to the police station, a mob attacked the police vehicle, dragged him out, and subjected him to a brutal beating.”
He was later rescued in critical condition and admitted to DMCH, the OC added.
Doctors at DMCH confirmed that Rabiul suffered severe injuries to his head and body, and his condition remains precarious.
Despite his critical state, police have taken him into custody, OC Kamal Hossain said, adding that preparations are underway to file a case against him.
Meanwhile, forensic examinations of the child have found evidence of abuse, confirmed Dr Sabina Yasmin, coordinator of DMCH’s One-Stop Crisis Centre (OCC).
DMP Gulshan Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Riazul Haque said that legal action will also be taken against those involved in the mob attack.
He emphasized that taking the law into one’s own hands is unlawful and that CCTV footage is being analyzed to identify those responsible.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has already instructed strict measures against mob violence, and necessary steps are being taken accordingly, DC Riazul Haque added.
