Recent incidents of violence, including rape, harassment, and murder, have highlighted the harsh realities many women face

In a powerful display of unity on International Women's Day, leaders from 67 women's organizations, under the banner of the Samajik Protirodh Committee, presented a 14-point demand calling for the prevention of violence and the introduction of direct elections for reserved women's seats in parliament.

The coalition, Samajik Protirodh Committee, emphasized that every significant creation in the world—be it by women or men—is beneficial, underscoring the vital role of gender equality in national progress.

Recent incidents of violence, including rape, harassment, and murder, have highlighted the harsh realities many women face, casting a shadow over the advancements made by some.

From young girls to older women, no one is exempt from this violence. While numerous examples of progress exist, pervasive security risks continue to hinder women at every step.

Following a cultural program and a declaration read by representatives of the 67 organizations, a discussion meeting addressed these pressing issues. Activists voiced their concerns over the normalization of harassment and violence, calling for effective measures to safeguard women's rights.

Women's rights activist Khushi Kabir urged: "Let us resist, let us not be afraid. Let us not subject ourselves to self-censorship. Let us raise our voices loudly."

Echoing this sentiment, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad President Dr Fauzia Moslem said: "Women's society must be freed from curses like child marriage. Children and adolescents must be rescued from the hands of destructive forces."

The day concluded with a protest rally that commenced at the Central Shaheed Minar and culminated at the Jatiya Press Club, as demonstrators demanded swift and effective action to end gender-based violence and ensure equal representation in parliament.
