The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has evicted more than 50 illegal establishments occupying government land in Gabtoli Beribadh for an extended period.
The eviction drive, conducted on Wednesday morning, targeted brick, sand, and stone warehouses operating without DNCC permission.
Business owners have been given seven days to remove their goods, failing which they must either legally rent the land or face further eviction measures.
Speaking to journalists during the drive, DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz said: "These businesses have been illegally occupying government land and conducting commercial activities without permission. The city corporation has not received a single penny in revenue from them. No prior notice is needed to evict illegal occupants, as they took over the land without informing us. This land will be reclaimed for the benefit of the country and its people."
He added that DNCC intends to convert the recovered land into parks and open spaces for public use, addressing the acute shortage of such areas in Dhaka city.
"Public spaces belong to the people. Residents of Dhaka have the right to access fields and parks. Currently, there is a severe lack of open spaces in the city. DNCC will continue this eviction drive to reclaim its properties and ensure proper use," Ejaz said.
He further mentioned that DNCC owns around 150 acres of land along both sides of Gabtoli Beribadh, much of which has been illegally occupied for years.
"This eviction drive has begun today and will continue regularly until all encroachments are removed," he affirmed.
