'We must remember that the total number of martyrs is still under review'

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has emphasized the significance of the July uprising, calling it a "great movement of the nation" that holds deep recognition across Bangladesh.

Speaking at a press briefing organized by the Press Wing at the Foreign Service Academy on Thursday, he said: “To all political parties in Bangladesh, they are July warriors, the heroes of July, and the martyrs of July. I believe that as long as Bangladesh exists, no one will forget the July warriors, and no one will forget the July martyrs.”

When asked whether the government would take steps to legally protect the entitlements of the injured and deceased, Shafiqul Alam responded that a department has already been established to oversee the matter in a structured manner.

“Everything is being handled systematically. Even after 53 years, questions remain regarding the list of freedom fighters. Multiple reviews have been conducted, and we have categorized accordingly. This interim government stands by everyone,” he said.

Addressing concerns about employment opportunities for the families of martyrs, he clarified that no quota system is being introduced. “This is not about quotas or a benefit system passed down through generations. Many injured individuals have suffered severely, some with five to six bullets in their eyes. It is inhumane. Many are still undergoing treatment,” he stated.

Shafiqul Alam revealed that 834 martyrs have been officially gazetted so far, but investigations continue.

“We must remember that the total number of martyrs is still under review. The United Nations estimates the death toll to be around 1,400. Some July martyrs were buried in unmarked graves, and we are working on identifying them. The number of martyrs may increase, but for now, it stands at 834,” he added.
