Gold traders on Wednesday staged a road blockade in protest against an attack on Anwar Hossain, the owner of Alankar Jewellers in Banasree, and demanded the arrest of the perpetrators.
At around 11:30am, members of the local jewellery owners’ association blocked the road in the Banasree area as part of their demonstration.
The protesting traders were from Khilgaon, Sabujbagh, Rampura and Shahjahanpur.
After nearly half an hour of road blockade, the gold traders marched towards Rampura police station.
Participants in the protest said the attackers must be arrested and the looted gold recovered by Saturday.
Otherwise, they would hold a protest rally in front of the National Press Club on Monday.
Md Yakub, president of the jewellery owners’ association, covering Khilgaon, Sabujbagh, Rampura and Shahjahanpur, expressed concern that the assailants responsible for the attack on Anwar have yet to be apprehended.
He criticized law enforcement for failing to arrest the perpetrators, emphasizing that traders in the area now feel vulnerable.
Yakub urged the authorities to strengthen security for business owners and demanded that Anwar be sent abroad for advanced medical treatment.
Prior to the road blockade, the gold traders formed a human chain in front of Alankar Jewellers, outlining several key demands, including the immediate arrest of the attackers, recovery of the stolen gold ornaments, advanced medical treatment abroad for the victim Anwar Hossain, enhanced security measures for business owners and regular updates on the case's progress through the media.
The incident occurred on Sunday night when Anwar was shot and robbed of gold ornaments on his person while returning home after closing his shop.
