Intern doctors and students from various government and private medical colleges staged a protest in front of the Supreme Court gate on Tuesday, demanding that only MBBS and BDS degree holders be allowed to use the title "doctor."
The demonstrators marched from the Central Shaheed Minar towards the High Court around noon but were stopped in front of the Supreme Court gate, where they continued their protest.
Hundreds of intern doctors and medical students joined the demonstration, accusing medical assistants of unlawfully using the "doctor" title despite legal restrictions.
According to the protesters, medical assistants filed a writ petition in 2013 seeking the right to use the title. Although the case has been pending for 11 years, they alleged that medical assistants continue to use the title illegally.
Sources said that the High Court is expected to issue an order regarding the writ petition later on Tuesday.
Key demands of the protesters include restricting the title "doctor" exclusively to MBBS and BDS degree holders, immediate recruitment of 10,000 doctors to address workforce shortages, and extending the age limit for BCS job applications to 34 years.
