The hanging body of a Rajshahi University (RU) student was recovered from a dormitory.
The deceased, Sifatullah Sifat, was a second-year student in the Fisheries Department.
He was the son of Abdul Mannan from Bamna Upazila, Barguna District.
On Friday (February 21) at around 7:30pm, his body was found hanging from a ceiling fan at the Tuhin Student Hostel in the Meherchandi area, near the university.
RU Proctor Professor Dr Mahbubur Rahman said: "His body was found hanging at around 7:30pm. After speaking with his classmates and teachers, we learned that he had been struggling with depression for some time. We believe he took his own life due to this depression."
According to sources in the Fisheries Department, Sifat was alone in his room in the afternoon.
In the evening, he was found hanging with a gamcha (thin towel) tied around his neck from the fan. He had reportedly been under mental stress for a while.
Professor ABM Mohsin, Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries, said: "The exact cause of death is still unknown. Many suspect it was suicide."
Chandrima Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Matiar Rahman confirmed the recovery of the hanging body.
He said that the body has been sent to the Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The cause of death is yet to be determined.
