A joint operation by security forces reportedly left two killed in the 40 Feet area of Bosila, Mohammadpur, Dhaka, in the early hours of Thursday.

Police had been dispatched to the scene, said Abdur Rab, a radio operator at Mohammadpur police station.

Meanwhile, a law enforcement officer, on condition of anonymity, said a group of armed criminals had suddenly opened fire on security force personnel during a routine patrol.

Law enforcement had returned fire in response, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, they added.

Five people were detained and weapons were recovered from the scene, but the identities of the deceased remain unknown.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate later issued a press release on the joint operation, reporting the death of two individuals and the detention of five criminals.

According to the statement, security forces conducted the operation at around 12:30am based on intelligence that criminals were preparing for a mugging in the Chand Udyan area.

“As the team surrounded both ends of a narrow alley, the criminals suddenly opened fire from the rooftop of a one-storey building. In self-defence, the security forces retaliated, successfully apprehending five armed criminals.

“During a subsequent search of the building, two bodies were found on the rooftop. Authorities recovered a pistol, four rounds of ammunition and a machete from the detained individuals, who have since been turned over to Mohammadpur police for legal proceedings.”

The ISPR said such operations would continue to ensure public safety.
