Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a nationwide protest rally on Tuesday, demanding the release of the party’s Assistant Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam.

In a statement on Monday, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar urged leaders, activists, and the public to participate in the program.

“Peaceful protest rallies and processions will be held in all metropolitan cities and districts, including Dhaka, on February 18, to demand the immediate release of ATM Azharul Islam,” he said.

Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman is set to lead the rally organized by Dhaka Metropolitan North and South at Paltan intersection on Tuesday at 4pm.

Golam Parwar claimed that Azharul Islam has been detained for over 13 years and subjected to repeated remand, physical and mental torture, and lack of medical care.

“The people had hoped that he would be released in a dictatorship-free Bangladesh. But despite six months and nine days under the interim government, he remains in prison,” he said, adding that keeping him detained is an act of “extreme oppression and injustice.”
