Candidates whose appointments as assistant teachers in government primary schools were cancelled following a High Court verdict staged a protest in front of the National Museum in Dhaka’s Shahbagh area on Sunday.
Talukder Pias, a candidate from Nagarkanda upazila in Faridpur and one of the protest leaders, said they began their demonstration around 10am.
“This rally is being held to protest the police's baton charge on female candidates and to demand that our appointments be reinstated,” he said.
Meanwhile, the government has filed an application with the Appellate Division seeking a stay on the High Court's decision to cancel the appointments of 6,500 teachers in government primary schools in Dhaka and Chittagong divisions.
The Directorate of Primary Education submitted the application on Thursday.
Confirming the development, Deputy Attorney General Md Asad Uddin said the appeal is likely to be heard in the Appellate Division’s Chamber Court on Sunday.
Kabita Akhter, one of the protesting candidates, said: “Today marks the 11th day of our demonstration. We have gathered here for a mass meeting to reclaim our rights. We want to tell the government that our rights have been unjustly taken away.”
