A counter-based bus service has been introduced in Dhaka city, starting from Thursday in an effort to streamline public transportation and reduce traffic congestion.
The service officially began at 12pm from the bus stand adjacent to Azampur Raw Market (BDR Market) in Uttara.
Under this new system, 2,610 buses from 21 transport companies will operate on various routes from Gazipur to Sayedabad, before expanding in phases to Mohammadpur, Mirpur, and Gulistan.
Speaking at the inauguration of the first phase, Dhaka Road Transport Owners’ Association General Secretary Saiful Alam said: "This initiative aims to improve passenger services, restore discipline on the roads, and reduce congestion. With this system, there will be no variation in fares, and students will be eligible for half fares."
He also emphasized that buses will no longer operate under a contract system, and passengers must queue at counters to purchase tickets before boarding from designated stops. Buses will only stop at specified locations, ensuring better traffic flow and safety.
Additionally, passengers can submit complaints or suggestions regarding their travel experience under the new system.
