Update : 01 Feb 2025, 07:10 PM

Students of Government Titumir College have blocked the Mohakhali road as part of their indefinite "Barasat Barricade to North City" movement, demanding the conversion of the college into a university along with seven other demands.

On Saturday, around 5:30pm, protesting students blocked the road at Mohakhali Amtoli.

Prior to that, at around 4:30pm, they had blocked the road in front of Titumir College.

Later, at 5pm, a procession of female students from inside the college headed toward Mohakhali.

Sohail Rana, a Geography department student of Titumir College and one of the protesters, said: "We have blocked the Mohakhali Amtoli road as part of our previously announced Barasat Barricade to North City movement, demanding the conversion of Titumir College into a university along with seven other demands. If our demands are not met, our movement will intensify further."

Earlier, on Friday night, during a press conference, it was revealed that the joint secretary of the Ministry of Education, Md Nuruzzaman, had visited the students.

He acknowledged that their demands were legitimate and said that he would inform the government about the matter.

However, the students were disappointed by his comment that they would have to continue with their hunger strike until death, while the government would consider the issue slowly and carefully.

During the press conference, it was also announced that if the government does not fulfill the students' seven demands by 4pm on Saturday, the "Barasat Barricade to North City" movement would continue with blockades on railways and roads in the North City Corporation area.

According to prior announcements, at around 5:30pm on Saturday, the students blocked the Mohakhali road.

As a result, traffic on the roads leading to Gulshan and Banani was halted, causing severe traffic jams in Mohakhali, Banani, Tejgaon Industrial Area, and surrounding areas.

Commuters, especially office-goers, faced extreme difficulties.

At around 6:15pm, students of Government Titumir College are heading to block the Gulshan-1 Gol Chattar to press for their seven-point demands.

They have announced that they will stage a full blockade at Gulshan-1 Gol Chattar as an escalation of their protest, bringing traffic movement in the area to a halt.
