Rumor Scanner: Ijtema clash propagated as atrocities against Hindus

When the post claiming the issue was examined, no detailed information or reliable evidence was found to support the claim

Update : 28 Jan 2025, 02:51 PM

Fact-checking body Rumor Scanner, in an investigation, revealed that a video scene of a clash between two sides of Tabligh Jamaat at the Biswa Ijtema ground is being propagated as a clash with Hindus or as atrocities against Hindus.

In a report published on its website on Saturday, the fact-checking organization said that recently, a scene of a clash was shared on social media, claiming: "The lives of Hindus in Bangladesh are now in danger" (translated).

As of the time of publishing this report, the video shared with the claim has been viewed more than three lakh times, and more than four thousand separate accounts have reacted to the video.

When the post claiming the issue was examined, no detailed information or reliable evidence was found to support the claim.

A reverse image search using multiple key frames of the video found that a report was published on the YouTube channel of the mainstream media outlet Kaler Kantho with the title: "There is tension between the two sides before the Ijtema begins, two companions of Tabligh admitted to the hospital," on December 12, 2024.

Comparing the video that was broadcast with the opening scene of the said video, a similarity was found.

The thumbnail of the video, broadcast on YouTube, says: "Attack on the car of Saad supporters | Road blockade by Zubair supporters."

In this context, a relevant keyword search found a news report published in the national daily Prothom Alo on December 13.

It said: "According to local sources, Zubair's followers performed a five-day Ijtema at the Ijtema ground from November 29 to December 3. Then, Saad's followers announced they would observe a five-day Ijtema from December 20. But Zubair's followers announced that they would not allow Saad's followers to hold a joint Ijtema at the Ijtema ground. Meanwhile, on December 12, when the news of Saad followers entering the Ijtema ground spread, Zubair's followers blocked the highway in the Station Road area around 1:00pm and started a protest. At that time, a car belonging to Saad's followers was vandalized. Two devotees belonging to Saad's followers were injured."

Additionally, several other media sources also reported on the clash between these two sides of the Tabligh Jamaat.

Therefore, the scene of the clash between the two sides of the Tabligh Jamaat at the Biswa Ijtema has been falsely broadcast as depicting a clash with Hindus or an attack on Hindus.
