Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport has been placed under a strict security blanket ahead of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s departure for London for medical treatment.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn), Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), have deployed a large number of personnel both inside and outside the airport premises on Tuesday.
Over 800 members of the APBn, supported by a dog squad and quick response team, have taken up positions at key points, including the airport’s main gates and domestic terminal entrance. Vehicles entering the airport are being thoroughly inspected, and individuals deemed suspicious are being searched.
Khaleda Zia is scheduled to leave Dhaka at 10pm on Tuesday night aboard a special air ambulance provided by the Emir of Qatar. Senior airport officials will be present during her departure. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), extensive security measures have been implemented to ensure her smooth departure and to avoid disruptions for other passengers.
CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Monjur Kabir Bhuiyan said: “We anticipate that BNP leaders and activists may gather at the airport to see her off. To prevent any security issues, we have taken all necessary precautions. Maximum measures are in place to ensure the safety of both Khaleda Zia and other passengers.”
He added that all airport facilities, including the main gates, domestic terminal, CAAB headquarters, and hangar gates, are under tight surveillance. Security personnel have been briefed on their responsibilities to maintain order and ensure safety.
Airport Armed Police Commanding Officer Shihab Kaiser Khan explained: “From 4pm, the entire airport area has been secured. Additional personnel, along with the quick response team and dog squad, are on duty. Any suspicious activity is being immediately addressed.”
Khaleda Zia is traveling to London for medical treatment following recommendations from her doctors. Her return date will be determined based on medical advice.
