A motorcyclist died in a head-on collision with a passenger bus on the Dhaka-Aricha highway near Savar on Friday.
The accident occurred at around 9:30pm in the area near Savar Thana Bus Stand.
The deceased is Sohrab Hossain, 44, son of Abdul Latif of Gangutia in Dhamrai.
According to witnesses, a double-decker bus carrying students of Jahangirnagar University was returning to the campus via the one-way lane of the road near Savar Thana Stand. Meanwhile, the motorcyclist violated traffic rules by driving against the flow of traffic, leading to the head-on collision.
The motorcycle, along with its rider, became trapped under the bus. The students aboard the bus stopped the vehicle and rescued the severely injured rider, who was bleeding heavily.
He was rushed to Enam Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. However, he succumbed to his injuries at 11:52pm while undergoing treatment in the hospital's neuro ICU.
Bus driver Md Abu Hanif said: "The motorcycle was coming from the wrong side of the road and suddenly overturned in front of my bus. I applied the brakes hard, but there was nothing else I could do. I carefully steered to prevent the bus from hitting the road divider, which could have caused a serious accident for the students onboard."
Savar Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sawgatul Alam confirmed the incident saying: “Sohrab Hossain, injured in the collision, passed away at 11:52pm in Enam Medical College's neuro ICU.”
Professor AKM Rashidul Alam, the proctor of Jahangirnagar University, said: "A university double-decker bus carrying students was returning to campus from Dhaka. The collision occurred near the Thana Bus Stand area when a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction hit the bus.”
“Such accidents and loss of life are deeply unfortunate. The university administration is profoundly saddened by this tragedy. We will extend our full support to the victim's family during this difficult time," he added.
