Battery-run autorickshaw drivers have again blocked key roads and railway tracks to protest a High Court order that had asked the government to take steps to ban the vehicles on Dhaka streets

The demonstrations blocked Mohammadpur, Agargaon, Gabtoli, Mirpur, Demra areas in Dhaka, which brought traffic to a standstill since Thursday morning.

The blockades have caused massive traffic congestion and significant inconvenience for office commuters.

Later, around 12pm, they blocked the railway tracks at Mohakhali, halting rail connectivity between Dhaka and the rest of the country.

Mohammad Anwar Hossain, the station master at Kamalapur Railway Station confirmed the matter.

The battery-run autorickshaw drivers also staged a protest against the ban on Wednesday, some of which escalated into clashes between demonstrators and police.

On Tuesday, a High Court bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi directed the authorities concerned to stop the operation of these vehicles within three days.
