Jagannath University unit Chhatra Dal leader Sadman Sammo has been accused of assaulting a student, Zahid Hasan Jony, from the Marketing Department for the academic year 2020-21.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, around 4pm at the main gate of the campus. Following the attack, Jony was taken to Al Khidmah Hospital in Khilgaon, Dhaka.
According to eyewitnesses, Jony was initially confined in a bus parked in front of the campus, where he was beaten for approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
He was then taken out of the bus and assaulted again at a nearby police outpost. The attack reportedly involved ten to twelve Chhatra Dal leaders.
Sadman Sammo, who is affiliated with Chhatra Dal Senior Joint General Secretary Mehedi Hasan Himel, is a student of the Finance Department for the academic year 2019-20.
In response to the allegations, Sammo claimed that Jony had been harassing a girl. Sammo said that when he confronted Jony about the harassment, Jony threatened to kill him.
Jony, who is currently receiving treatment at the hospital, was unable to comment on the situation.
Sujan Molla, general secretary of Chhatra Dal, acknowledged the reports of the incident and assured that if the allegations are proven true, an investigation will be conducted and appropriate action will be taken.
Asaduzzaman Aslam, president of the Chhatra Dal JnU unit emphasized that their politics are focused on serving the general students.
He promised that the organization would investigate the matter, verify the claims, and take necessary organizational actions.
He also assured that maximum legal assistance would be provided to ensure that Jony receives justice.
