A motorcyclist was killed after being hit by a bus from Binimoy Paribahan in the capital's Banani area.

The incident occurred on Saturday at 11:30am in front of the Dhaka Gate of Banani Cemetery.

The deceased was identified as Akkas, 55.

Confirming the incident, Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Sahan Haq said that a motorcycle was taking a U-turn from Banani's 27 number area and heading towards Uttara. Suddenly, a bus from Binimoy Paribahan hit the motorcycle and dragged it for a short distance. The motorcyclist was killed on the spot.

He added that the bus, ignoring traffic signals, was driving recklessly and hit the motorcycle from behind, causing the rider to fall under the bus.

Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector Jan-e-Alam said the body has been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for an autopsy.

Akkas was formerly a government employee and currently worked at a company named Transpot in SQ Cables, he added.

Meanwhile, the driver and helper of the bus have been detained and are in police custody.
