Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has launched an eviction drive to evict hawkers from the streets and footpaths of Newmarket, one of the capital's busiest areas on Saturday.
Ramna Traffic Division Deputy Commissioner of Police and Additional DIG Zainul Abedin confirmed the matter.
He said: "On the orders of DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, the road and footpaths were freed from encroachment. The operation is underway to normalize traffic.
“Legal action has been taken against those creating traffic jams by illegally occupying the road from Gauchia Market to Bata Signal on both sides of the road from Newmarket Crossing to Dhaka College,” he added.
Additional DIG said: “There are some spaces on lease from the city corporation for car parking. In this area, only cars will be parked there.
“We will not allow any hawker to occupy these places. If they do it again, we will again launch an operation against the illegal occupiers,” he added.
