Autorickshaw protests: 2,500 accused in four cases

  • Cases allege obstruction of police work, vandalism, arson, attacks on police
  • 37 autorickshaw drivers arrested in separate raids

At least four cases have been filed against over 2,500 autorickshaw drivers following a protest in the capital’s Mirpur area on Sunday.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of DMP Mirpur Division Jasim Uddin Molla said that two cases were filed at Pallabi police station, one at Kafrul police station, and one at Mirpur Model police station.

These cases allege obstruction of police work, vandalism, arson, and attacks on police during the daylong protest.

Jasim said that 37 autorickshaw drivers have been arrested in separate raids conducted by four police stations.

"Autorickshaw drivers began rampaging in the Kalshi area of the capital on Sunday afternoon, blocking the Kalshi flyover and the road. They set a traffic police box on fire and vandalized several buses. Legal action is being taken against those involved in the attacks, arson, and vandalism," he said.

Sub Inspector (SI) Mohammad Ali is the plaintiff in the two cases filed at Pallabi police station. The complaints include unlawful assembly, obstruction of official duties, assault on police, vandalism, and the detonation of explosives. The estimated damage is Tk10 lakh.

Twenty-two individuals are named as accused, while an additional 1,000 to 1,200 people are unidentified.

Sergeant Mintu Chandra Dey is the plaintiff in the case filed by the Traffic Police Pallabi Zone. The case accuses 500 to 600 unidentified people of causing Tk5 lakh worth of damage due to vandalism and arson.

Pallabi police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Apoorba Hasan said that 15 autorickshaw drivers have been arrested in the two cases filed at Pallabi police station.

Mirpur Model police station OC Sabbir Ahmed said that 10 individuals have been arrested in the case filed there. There are ongoing operations to apprehend those involved in assault, vandalism, arson, and obstructing police work.

Kafrul police station OC Farukul Alam said that 600 to 700 unidentified persons have been accused in the case filed at Kafrul police station, with 12 individuals arrested so far.
