Rain brings suffering for Dhaka residents

  • Many faced inconveniences while leaving their offices
  • Most were caught off guard without an umbrella
Update : 19 Mar 2024, 10:06 PM

A few locations in the city experienced light rainfall along with stormy winds on Tuesday afternoon, which caused the temperature in Dhaka to drop slightly.

For those observing Ramadan, the rain came as a blessing.

The sky had been cloudy since the morning, though the temperature was high. The capital was sweltering in the humid heat. As the day progressed, the density of the clouds in the sky started to increase.

The temperature in Dhaka ranged from 34.3 to 25.1 degrees Celsius throughout the day.

At around 2:30pm, the sky turned dark, and rain started at about 2:45pm with stormy winds, soaking the streets of Dhaka. However, many faced inconveniences while leaving their offices.

Many were seen waiting for buses and taxis at bus stops, but most were caught off guard without an umbrella.

Rainfall was reported in places including Sukrabad, Zigatola, Panthapath, Moghbazar, Old Dhaka, Motijheel, Kakrail, Puran Paltan, Shantinagar, and Malibagh in the capital.

Meanwhile, several roads became submerged in clogged water following the rain. This created additional traffic congestion on the main roads of the capitals. The suffering of the passengers was unbearable, as many were waiting to break their Ramadan fast.

Syed Ahmed, a job holder, said his bus was stuck on the elevated expressway for 20 minutes.

Another bus passenger, Jharna Roy, said the rainwater remained on the roads even two hours after the shower.

Safayet Hossain, a traffic sergeant in Mohammadpur, said that the congestion was created as many vehicles entered different roads randomly during the rain. Other than that, the traffic situation was as usual.

Meanwhile, the Met Office, in its latest bulletin, said rain and thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind are likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Khulna divisions and at a few places over Barisal and Sylhet divisions on Wednesday.
