Three killed in separate road crashes in Dhaka

  • Victims include an 11-year-old child
  • Reported between midnight and 5am on Friday

Three people have been killed in three separate road accidents in Dhaka’s Banani, Jatrabari and Mohammadpur.

The deceased have been identified as van driver Abul Kalam Hawlader, 42, a tailor Shahjahan Talukder, and an 11-year-old child Mahmud Rifat. 

The incidents were reported between midnight and 5am on Friday.

Abul Kalam Hawlader’s daughter said he worked on the Jatrabari route. On Friday morning, he was hit by a covered van and suffered serious injuries. 

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared him dead. 

Jatrabari police station Sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan confirmed matter and said the body was handed over to the family. 

Meanwhile, a family member of Shahjahan Talukder, Ohidul Islam, said Shahjahan was returning home when a speeding motorcycle hit him. 

He was first taken to Kurmitola General Hospital and then to DMCH when his condition deteriorated. Later, the doctors at the DMCH emergency department declared him dead.

Shyamal Ahmed, sub-inspector of Banani police station, said the body was handed over to the family without autopsy.

Mahmud Rifat was on a motorcycle with his father when a covered van hit the vehicle.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Arifur Rahman of Mohammadpur police station said Rifat died on the spot. 

Police managed to detain the covered van driver.
