The detective branch (DB) of the police has announced plans to conduct operations in all areas of the capital against teen gangs and their masterminds.
The DB emphasized that if anyone attempts to escape justice by naming so-called masterminds, those masterminds will also be arrested.
The agency urged individuals with information about the robbers and their masterminds to come forward and inform the detective police.
On Wednesday, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained 10 suspected members of juvenile gangs in various areas, including Taj Mahal Road, Geneva Camp, Bosila, and the surroundings of Mohammadpur police station in the capital.
The detainees are Raja, 35, Md Jalal, 25, Md Mridul, 26, Md Jahangir, 35, Md Shamim Mia, 24, Md Shahid, 25, Md Shimul, 25, Md Monirul Islam, 27, Md Sohail Khan, 23, and Noor Mohammad, 20. Local weapons were reportedly recovered from them during the arrests.
DB chief and DMP Additional Commissioner (Investigation) Md Harunor Rashid shared this information during a press briefing at his office on Minto Road on Thursday afternoon.
He said: “The arrested individuals were involved in various crimes, including robbery, in different areas of Mohammadpur. They used human haulers for their criminal activities, and the drivers and helpers of these vehicles were also implicated. The group operated under the guidance of some elder leaders and engaged in threatening and robbing at night using local weapons.”
Harunor Rashid mentioned that several masterminds had been identified, and regardless of their political affiliation, they would not be exempt from legal actions.
He highlighted the active involvement of teen gang groups in Uttara and Mohammadpur, causing distress among local residents.
The DB said they have received numerous complaints, including theft, robbery, snatching of mobile phones from cars, and harassment of adolescent girls. In response, the Tejgaon division of DB initiated operations, leading to the arrest of 10 individuals in Mohammadpur.
The DB chief emphasized that the operation against juvenile gangs would continue throughout the capital, urging the public to provide information to the detective police about robbers and their leaders.
When asked about potential action against the abettors of teen gangs, Additional Commissioner Harun said that the DB, equipped with over 40 smart teams, would spare no one involved in lawlessness, looting, or criminal activities.
Multiple cases were reported against each arrested individual, with Raja facing 11 cases and Mridul having four cases, according to DB officials.
