Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) organized a reception ceremony for freedom fighters and the family members of martyrs on the occasion of Victory Day-2023 at Krishibid Institution Auditorium in the capital on Thursday afternoon.
DNCC Mayor Md Atiqul Islam announced plans to reserve one day every two months, from 10am-4pm, exclusively for freedom fighters and their family members.
He expressed his commitment to meeting with them at the DNCC auditorium on the last Monday of every two months, ensuring their voices are heard, and resolving any problems they may face.
The ceremony felicitated 1,300 freedom fighters and martyr family members from Dhaka city.
Mayor Atiqul Islam assured that freedom fighters seeking services from Dhaka North City Corporation would not face any hassles and emphasized immediate attention and action for their concerns.
He also pledged to maintain the graveyards designated for freedom fighters for the rest of their lives, showing respect for their sacrifices.
Addressing present freedom fighters, Mayor Atiqul Islam acknowledged the unique respect and recognition provided by the current government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He commended Sheikh Hasina's commitment to honouring the contributions of freedom fighters and promised a larger reception in December 2024, with a victory procession and various activities.
The mayor announced plans for constructing a freedom fighter gate in Mirpur and highlighted ongoing efforts to beautify Jalladkhana Killing Field in Mirpur, turning it into a library for future generations to learn about the true history of the liberation war.
Mayor Atiqul Islam concluded with a call to love the country and the city, echoing the patriotism exhibited by the Father of the Nation and the freedom fighters.
He urged everyone to speak out against illegal encroachments on canals, fields, roads, and footpaths, emphasizing collective responsibility for building a beautiful city.
