Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Dr ASM Maksud Kamal has called on the government to reduce metro rail fares for school, college, and university students.

He made the demand at a ceremony at the Uttara Diabari Station on Monday afternoon, after a metro rail journey with over 500 teachers and students of the university.

Maksud Kamal said: "Metro rail is a milestone in providing fast and comfortable communication to the city dwellers. Labour and time are being saved as the travel of working people is easier. Due to metro rail travel, the trend of using private cars is decreasing. It also reduces the use of fossil fuels and protects the balance of the environment.”

"If our students regularly travel by metro rail, they will gain an understanding of the government's facilities. This experience will change their mindset and instil pride in the country's progress, thereby strengthening their determination to contribute to the welfare of the country and its people," he added.

The vice-chancellor said: "Under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's leadership, Bangladesh has achieved unique heights in all sectors, including connectivity and infrastructure. Her government is synonymous with development. The socio-economic advancement of Bangladesh has now become a global wonder and a role model for the entire world."

Referring to the Prime Minister's efforts to advance Bangladesh from digital to smart, he said: "Major projects like the Padma Bridge, metro rail, Karnaphuli Tunnel, and elevated expressways have been completed. To sustain this progress, Sheikh Hasina's pro-Liberation War leadership needs to return to power."
