Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in a drive arrested Shamim Mahmud, joint convener of Dhaka South City unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), from Naya Paltan area in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Shamim is said to be the prime suspect for planning and carrying out violent activities on October 28 in Paltan area and the following days centring the BNP’s programs.
Mahid Uddin, additional commissioner (crime and office) of DMP said this while briefing reporters at DMP media centre on Wednesday.
He was also the mastermind behind the violence on that day and the BNP workers led by Shamim carried out subversive activities near the BNP office and Rajarbagh Police Hospital, he said.
Police said Shamim made plans for carrying out violence on October 26 and implemented them on October 28.
The DMP additional commissioner said Shamim's direct involvement was found in the violence on that day from video footage.
Following the directive of a central leader of BNP, Shamim collected a bag from one Maruf, from Dania foot-over bridge the day before the grand rally to hand it over to one Riyad at Naya Paltan, police said. Later on October 28, they executed their plan by hurling bombs, he added.
Police claimed that Riyad also led a group of men to carry out attacks in Paltan and Rajarbagh police lines hospital on October 28.
Meanwhile, the police official confirmed that they also arrested Maruf, who set fire to a bus of Basumoti Paribahan in Pallabi-11 area of Dhaka early Wednesday. Maruf torched the vehicle under directive from BNP Councilor Sazzad and Jashim for Tk3,000, said the police official told UNB.
